The Africast is joining Africa Day!
During Africa Day, hosts Jos Hummelen and Joeri Nortier will record a special live episode of their podcast, featuring none other than Jan Pronk as their guest. Together, they’ll dive into his latest book, Scheuren rond de Hoorn van Afrika (Fractures around the Horn of Africa), exploring the challenges and opportunities in a region that has long been a stage for geopolitical and social tensions.
About the Africast
The Africast is a Dutch podcast about history, entrepreneurship, and geopolitics in Africa. The idea was born during the COVID-19 pandemic, when live lectures and film screenings were no longer possible. The hosts decided to continue the conversation about Africa in a new way through podcasting, directly reaching listeners at home. Their mission is to inspire young people to look beyond familiar headlines about famine, conflict, and coups. Instead, the Africast aims to share the stories behind the continent: stories of history, resilience, innovation, and opportunity.
Over time, the podcast has grown to include more than a hundred episodes and an impressive lineup of guests. Among them are Samira Rafaela (former Member of the European Parliament), who discussed Europe’s influence, and Max Koffi (founder of the Equal Trade Alliance), who spoke about fair trade and Africa’s role in the global economy.
The live episode with Jan Pronk
During Africa Day, the Africast welcomes a special guest: Jan Pronk, former minister and diplomat representing the Dutch Labour Party (Partij van de Arbeid). With decades of experience as Minister for Development Cooperation and Minister of Defense, and his extensive work in East Africa, Jan Pronk brings deep insight into the region.
In his book Scheuren rond de Hoorn van Afrika, he explores how political, social, and economic fractures both shape and divide societies. In this live recording, he joins the hosts to discuss the roots of these fractures and, more importantly: what can be done to heal them?
