Naarmate het mondiale landschap zich verder ontwikkelt, staat multilaterale samenwerking voor steeds grotere uitdagingen. In deze sessie worden Afrikaanse en Europese perspectieven op de huidige stand van zaken en de toekomst van multilaterale samenwerking onderzocht, evenals de rol van Afrika daarin. Kunnen we een multilateraal systeem bedenken dat inclusiever, representatiever en effectiever is?

Naarmate de mondiale machtsverhoudingen verschuiven en sommige donoren zich terugtrekken, speelt gezondheidsdiplomatie een steeds belangrijkere rol bij het versterken van de samenwerking tussen Afrika en Europa. Deze sessie onderzoekt hoe veerkrachtige gezondheidssystemen, eerlijke partnerschappen en gezamenlijke paraatheidsinspanningen kunnen bijdragen aan de collectieve gezondheid en veiligheid.
Aan de hand van lessen uit Oeganda’s flexibele surveillancesystemen, het Nederlandse besef dat internationale gezondheid directe gevolgen heeft voor het binnenlandse welzijn, en het inzicht dat defensie op zichzelf geen veiligheid kan garanderen, benadrukt de discussie de onderlinge verwevenheid van diplomatie, ontwikkeling en veiligheid binnen mondiale gezondheid.

In a rapidly shifting, multipolar world, local civil society is the backbone of inclusive progress. This panel session brings together frontline LGBTIQ+ voices from Africa with Dutch policymakers and COC Nederland to highlight what’s at stake as the Netherlands implements budget cuts to its civil society grants framework. Through real-world examples from the Power of Pride program, we will highlight how continued Dutch support enables lasting change for communities that need it most, and outline what policymakers, donors, and civil society can do to ensure that human rights remain central to Dutch engagement worldwide.

As the world's largest youth continent, Africa’s future is shaped by the ambitions, creativity, and leadership of its young population. At the same time, Europe remains an important political and economic partner, but one with a complex historical legacy. This raises essential questions: What does equal cooperation look like in practice? What space is there for African youth priorities? And how can Europe support without overshadowing?

We are part of the Erasmus+ EU–Africa Youth Think Tank of Foundation Max van der Stoel. Over the past two months, we have worked on a dilemma posed by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs: how can the relationship between the EU and Africa evolve into one that truly benefits both sides, especially young people?

Instead of focusing only on current obstacles, we want to imagine possibilities. We explore what the future of Africa–Europe relations could look like if youth interests and perspectives were put at the center. 

During our Africaday session, existing initiatives such as the Youth at Heart Strategy will be discussed through interactive case studies, where the audience can engage in dialogue with us on EU/Africa youth participation. 

We invite the audience to challenge assumptions, test their knowledge, and co-create ideas for a future in which African youth and European partners build a relationship that is not only fair but also forward-looking.

As global power shifts accelerate, Africa and Europe stand at a crossroads in redefining their role in an increasingly multipolar world. Yet, perceptions of the European Union’s normative stance, coupled with the persistence of extractive dynamics in certain economic and political engagements, continue to complicate efforts to establish a genuinely balanced partnership. At the same time, both continents have articulated strong commitments to revitalizing multilateralism as a means of addressing shared global challenges — ranging from climate change and economic volatility to pressing security concerns across both regions. With the upcoming EU–AU summit in Angola, the central question emerges: how can both continents move beyond inherited asymmetries to construct a partnership anchored in mutual trust, shared responsibility, and a commitment to sustainable development?

De wereldwijde verschuiving naar het verminderen van CO2-uitstoot en de overstap naar hernieuwbare energie zorgt voor een snel groeiende vraag naar kritieke mineralen zoals kobalt, koper en lithium. Veel van deze mineralen worden gewonnen in Afrikaanse landen. Goed nieuws? Sluit u aan bij onze inspirerende en deskundige panelleden om te ontdekken wie er profiteert van de strijd om kritieke mineralen in Afrikaanse landen. We zullen verschillende niveaus van voordelen en kosten onderzoeken, van lokaal tot mondiaal. We leggen een verband tussen de kleinschalige en ambachtelijke mijnbouwsector in Zambia en onderzoek naar de sociale impact van de winning van kritieke mineralen en het beleid en de praktijken die nodig zijn voor een verantwoorde energietransitie, een rechtvaardige transitie vereist actie op alle niveaus.

Tijdens deze interactieve workshop nemen Daniel Grmazion (Modern AfriQa) en Max Koffi (Equal Trade Alliance)je mee in de complexe wereld van de cacaoketen. Nederland is de grootste importeur van Ghanese cacaobonen, maar hoe toekomstbestendig is deze handel? Samen onderzoeken we hoe nieuwe ecosystemen kunnen bijdragen aan meer gelijkwaardigheid, eerlijke verdeling en duurzame samenwerking tussen Afrika en Europa. Een inspirerende sessie waarin denken en doen samenkomen en waarin echte impact wordt gemaakt.

It is an understatement to say that the space for civil society is shrinking worldwide. Every year, the world map turns a little redder in the overviews of organisations such as Freedom House and Civicus, which monitor civil society space. This year, the Advisory Council on International Affairs published a report with the telling title “Shrinking civil society space: freedom and security under pressure”. This does not only concern countries in the global south. Fundamental freedoms are also under pressure in Europe and North America. Civicus now also describes the situation in the Netherlands as “narrowed” and points to the restriction of the right to demonstrate and the Transparency of Civil Society Organisations Act (WTMO) as problematic, among other things.

This session will focus on what it means in concrete terms for organisations and their employees on the African continent when space “shrinks”. But also how we could reclaim this space.

De focus van deze sessie, georganiseerd door WECF, ligt op het versterken van de Afrikaanse ecofeministische stemmen en het onderzoeken hoe grassroots-oplossingen onder leiding van vrouwen en meisjes het discours verschuiven van afhankelijkheid en hulp naar zeggenschap, gelijkheid en tastbare impact op de gemeenschap door middel van het opbouwen van bewegingen, het herverdelen van subsidies en het versterken van solidariteit.

The current global context is marked by increasing complexity, unpredictability, and volatility. Geopolitical tensions, economic disruptions, and overlapping global crises have exposed the vulnerabilities of existing development finance frameworks. These challenges underscore the urgent need to forge new, strategic partnerships for development financing, including through cooperation between African countries and the European Union.

This side event explored how to ensure that Global Gateway and similar strategies meet the full scope of their ambition, with a specific focus on perspectives and priorities from African countries.

In deze live podcast opname van De Africast duiken we samen met Ellen Mangnus (Wageningen University) en Maureen Duru (The Food Bridge) in de toekomst van landbouw en voedselzekerheid tussen Afrika en Europa. Hoe beïnvloedt een veranderende mondiale machtsorde de handel, duurzame ontwikkeling en eerlijke waardeketens? Together with the Youth Think Tank and fellow participants, you will design the principles and policies of the future economy. Join us, in creating a shared space for ambitious, out-of-the-box and fresh ideas that challenge our current paradigms and rethink what our economic system should look like.

Tijdens dit Afrikavisiedebat met Politieke Partijen op het hoofdpodium reflecteren we op 30 jaar Afrikadag en kijken ze vooruit: hoe kan de relatie tussen Nederland en Afrika de komende dertig jaar het beste vorm krijgen? In een veranderende geopolitieke wereldorde bespreken ze prioriteiten en kansen voor samenwerking, en wat dit vraagt van de Nederlandse politiek en de BHOS-agenda.

Hoe kunnen Afrikaanse mijnwerkers invloed uitoefenen op Europese regels voor duurzame grondstoffen? Zijn die een zegen of een papieren werkelijkheid? Tijdens deze interactieve sessie duiken we in de praktijk van de mijnbouw in Zuid-Afrika. De arbeidsomstandigheden voor mijnwerkers zijn extreem zwaar, gevaarlijk en ongezond. Elk jaar komen tientallen arbeiders om het leven door ongelukken. Velen kampen met gezondheidsproblemen zoals silicose. We bespreken of de nieuwe Europese duurzaamheidsregels hierin echt verbetering brengen, en wat er nodig is. Je hoort verhalen van mijnwerkers en lokale gemeenschappen, en we gaan in gesprek met experts, politici en bedrijfsvertegenwoordigers. 

Despite its formal commitment to multilateralism and to the Global Compact for Migration (which, however, is not binding and has not been ratified by all EU member states), the European Union and its member states consistently pursue cooperation on migration at the minilateral or bilateral level, often through non-legally binding agreements with the countries of origin and transit. The informality and flexibility of these agreements, their temporary nature, the conditionality they entail, and the increasingly securitarian approach – mostly aimed at limiting mobility – not only undermine the certainty of long-term commitments, but overlook the interests of the countries of origin, which are consistently in a position of inferiority. Finally, such cooperation operates outside the UN framework. This further contributes to the weakening of multilateralism and multilateral institutions, making migration governance increasingly fragile. What should the European Union, the African regional organisation, and states do to prevent the decline of multilateral cooperation in the field of migration?
