During the Africa Day on Saturday the 21st of November, the European Network of Political Foundations is hosting a unique session: a screening and discussion of the documentary We Shall Lead: Voices Shaping the Future of Africa.
This is the first time the film will be shown in Europe. At the heart of the project lies the question: how can younger generations see themselves represented in political life — and believe that participation is worth it?
Throughout the documentary you meet women and young political leaders from different political backgrounds, and across generations in Kenya, Uganda and Ghana. You'll find out why they chose to engage in politics, and the different barriers they encounter, the choices they make what leadership means to them in today's democratic landscape.
The key is rethinking political leadership from the ground up. Across Africa, younger generations and women are entering political life at a time when trust in political institutions is being challenged and established ideas about who leads — and how — are increasingly being questioned.
During the session at the Africa Day a section of the documentary will be screened, acting as a starting point for a broader discussion. Joining the discussion are Serah Wanjiku Thiga, National Youth Leader Democracy for the Citizens Party of Kenya and Founder and Chairperson of Gears for Change Initiative, and Lawrencia Pomaa, KAS Ghana WYDE Project Manager expert in Leadership where she leads initiatives strengthening democratic institutions, governance, and political leadership. The discussion will be moderated by Kelvin Nii Kwatey Quartey, youth leadership advocate, entrepreneur and WYDE Youth Advisory Board Member for Ghana.
Together with the audience they will reflect on what happens when younger and female voices seek to create change from within political institutions? What continues to prevent meaningful participation? How can political institutions learn from the leadership already emerging around them?
